Making Plans

By nature, Alycia and I tend to be planners. We’re not so rigid that we can’t change our plans, but for the most part we like to know what we’re doing. Alycia’s unexpected journey has led us to do even more planning. Not only are we planning out our meals for the week and our kids’ activities, but we’re also drafting a schedule to pick up the kids from school and trying to figure out how well Alycia’s going to feel when making future plans.

We are wrapping up Alycia’s second cycle this week and getting ready for her next treatment on Thursday. We’re thankful that the second cycle was a lot like the first. There were some variations in how Alycia felt but, for the most part, if the following cycles are like the first two, we know what to expect. That predictability really helps as we’re trying to plan out the next few months and navigate the upcoming cycles.

One of the benefits of the predictability is that Alycia has gone back to work. She’s on a modified work schedule that isn’t as demanding as her normal role, but she’s happy to have something to do. She’s able to rest when she needs to but having work to do adds a little more purpose to her days.

The kids are doing well. Josiah is getting more comfortable with his first year in school and Clara continues to be living her best life, hanging out with her friends all day while getting to learn. They’re understanding the rhythms of Alycia’s treatment, knowing that mommy needs more rest immediately following treatment. I know they wish Alycia could pick them up from school or go to all of their activities, but they want what’s best for Alycia. Also, when grandparents, aunts, and surrogate grandparents pick them up from school, they usually end up getting a treat, which they’re not complaining about.

Here are some ways you can be praying for us:

  • Pray that the treatment kills the cancer in Alycia’s body and cures her of the disease.
  • During Alycia’s last treatment, she had an allergic reaction. Everything ended up fine, but it did add about an hour and a half to the treatment time. Please pray that Alycia makes it through this treatment without any reactions.
  • Pray for all of us next weekend. Last time, Alycia was completely knocked out after her treatment. Pray that Alycia recovers well, but also for Clara, Jo, and me as we keep the house together.
  • Pray for Alycia as she’s back working, that she would continue to enjoy the work while finding time to rest.

Thank you so much for going on this journey with us. We appreciate all the prayers, cards, and support. Our church set up meal delivery for us and, all of you must really love Alycia, because it’s almost full. Here’s the link if you’d like to sign up to bring us a meal in November.
